Hailstorm Hits Cypress Texas 12/24/2025
Texas Hail Tracker / Hailstorm Hits Cypress, TX 12/24/2025 (Complete Guide)
Hey everyone, my name is Ryan Thompson Owner and President of Vantage Roofing Solutions.
On Christmas Eve, 2024 I witnessed firsthand the powerful hailstorm that struck Cypress, TX. What started as a normal Christmas Eve, quickly turned into a severed thunderstorm with damaging hail. Chron.com
Quickly after the notifications started rolling in, reports of quarter-sized to golf-ball-sized hail hammering down and heavy winds prompted tornado watches that caused a ground stop at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.
Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported in Cypress from this event, but the scope of the hailstorm’s impact was widespread. In this blog post, I’ll summarize what happened during the Christmas Eve 2024 hailstorm, detail which Cypress neighborhoods were affected, describe the size of the hail and resulting damage, and provide helpful tips on identifying hail damage on your property.
I’ll also explain how my team at Vantage Roofing Solutions can help you with free roof inspections and insurance claim guidance in the aftermath. As a local roofing professional with years of storm restoration experience, my goal is to inform and reassure our Cypress community with trustworthy, actionable advice (backed by credible data and my own on-the-ground expertise). Let’s dive in.

Storm Damaged Areas
One thing that stood out about this hailstorm was how patchy the damage was across different parts of Cypress. As is common with hail, one neighborhood can be hard-hit while a mile away there’s minimal impact.
Towne Lake: Saw some of the largest hail. Residents shared photos of golf-ball hailstones collected on their patios and yards. Vehicles left outside in Towne Lake ended up with dinged hoods and cracked windshields, according to a few neighbors who posted online. Hail was seen splashing in the community’s lakes – a surreal sight for Christmas Eve.
Bridgeland: This master-planned community in northwest Cypress reported quarter-size to ping-pong-ball-size hail. Many trees were shredded of their leaves, and homeowners found plant beds littered with tattered foliage. A few reports of cracked skylights and broken outdoor light fixtures came from Bridgeland, indicating hail impact.
Fairfield: Further up along Highway 290, Fairfield residents saw around quarter-sized hail. While slightly smaller on average, the hail here still packed a punch. I spoke with a Fairfield homeowner the next day who noticed dents in her aluminum window screens and gutter downspouts – clear signs of hail strike.
Coles Crossing & Cypress Creek Lakes: These neighborhoods closer to Hwy 290 and Barker Cypress got hail in the pea to nickel range (half-inch to 0.88″) with a few reaching quarter-size. Damage was more subtle but present – lots of granules knocked off roofs (evidenced by granule piles at downspouts) and small dents in metal mailboxes.
Outside Cypress proper, communities like Jersey Village, Tomball, and parts of Copperfield also experienced hail from the same storm cell. Tomball saw up to quarter-size hail, and Jersey Village had heavy rain with some hail mixed in. The storm path essentially started west of Cypress (near Waller and Hockley interactivehailmaps.com) and moved east, dropping the largest hail over central Cypress before weakening towards the city of Houston.
Many Cypress residents were posting that night about the hail – so if your area got hit, there’s a high chance it was discussed. And of course, visible signs on your property (which we’ll cover next) can tell the tale.
How to spot hail damage from the ground
In this section, I will breakdown what I personally look for when we are inspecting a property for hail damage on the “Ground Level” without having to jump on the roof.
Soft Metal Damage
Paint Damage
Hail Hits on Fence
Hail Hits on AC Unit
Dents on Window Screen
Fascia Damage
If you spot any of these signs, it’s wise to have a professional take a closer look at your roof and property. Hidden, unseen damage is common – your roof might have multiple bruised shingles that won’t start leaking until months later when our spring rains arrive.
In my years of experience and someone who has climbed onto countless roofs after storms, I can’t stress enough: don’t assume your roof is fine just because you don’t see a gaping hole. Most hail damage is subtle to the untrained eye, but it can drastically shorten the lifespan of your roof, or other parts of your home.
Avoid Expensive Repairs By Addressing Hail Damage Early
Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against the elements, but after a hailstorm, its ability to protect your property may be compromised.
Even if there are no visible leaks or missing shingles, hail damage can weaken the structural integrity of your roof, leading to costly repairs down the road.
Small cracks, bruised shingles, and granule loss may seem minor at first but can quickly escalate into major issues like water infiltration, mold growth, and insulation damage.
By addressing hail damage early, homeowners can prevent these problems before they require extensive—and expensive—repairs or even a full roof replacement.
Taking action immediately after a hailstorm can also save you money in the long run, especially when it comes to insurance claims.
Many insurance companies impose strict deadlines for filing storm-related claims, meaning that waiting too long to have your roof inspected could result in a denied claim. Additionally, untreated hail damage may void certain warranties or lead to policy exclusions if further deterioration occurs due to negligence. A professional roof inspection can identify hidden damage and provide the necessary documentation to ensure a smooth insurance process. By proactively addressing hail damage, you not only protect your home but also safeguard your finances from unexpected repair costs.

Upgrading to an Impact Resistant Shingle Can Save You Money
An Impact Resistant Shingle is a asphalt shingle that is engineered to withstand hail damage.
Impact-resistant roofing is designed to reduce impact damage from hail, minimize granule loss and ensure your roof stays strong for years to come.
Many insurance companies offer discounts to homeowners with impact-resistant roofing, particularly those in hail-prone areas. According to Emily Long at NBC News, upgrading to impact-resistant shingles can lead to annual savings of 5% to 35% on home insurance premiums. Check with your insurer to see if you qualify for such discounts.
In fact, when you work with us here at Vantage Roofing Solutions, you can get a Class 3 Impact Resistant Shingle for the same price as a standard 30-year shingle.
Cypress Hail Storm FAQ (12/24/2024)
How big was the hail that hit Cypress on December 24, 2024?
Radar confirmed hail ranging from quarter-size (1.00”) to golf-ball-size (1.75”) in Cypress. The hardest-hit neighborhoods were Fairfield, Bridgeland, Towne Lake, Coles Crossing, and Cypress Creek Lakes. At that size, shingles can crack, lose granules, and begin to fail — even if you don’t see missing shingles from the ground.
Do I need a roof inspection if I don't see visible damage?
Yes. In Cypress, many homes are built with builder-grade shingles that often fail early under storm pressure. Hail damage is usually not visible from the street.
We often find cracked shingles, bruised spots, and lifted seals during inspections that homeowners miss. Left unchecked, this type of hidden damage leads to leaks and insurance claim denials down the road.
Does homeowners insurance cover hail damage in Cypress?
Yes — if your roof was damaged during the December 24, 2024 hail storm, your homeowners insurance policy should cover the cost of repair or replacement (minus your deductible). Insurers typically give you up to 12 months to file a claim, but it’s best to start immediately so your adjuster can tie the damage directly to this storm.
How long will a roof last in Cypress after a hail storm?
It depends on the severity of the storm and the type of shingle.
A well-installed roof in Cypress should last 15–18 years, but repeated hailstorms (like this one on 12/24/24) can cut that lifespan in half.
Roofs over 10 years old in Cypress neighborhoods are especially at risk because of cheaper shingles and poor ventilation used in original builds.
What is the best shingle option for Cypress homeowners after this storm?
For storm-prone areas like Cypress, we recommend Class 4 Impact Resistant shingles. They’re designed to withstand larger hail and high winds, and most insurance carriers offer 5–30% discounts for upgrading.
If budget is a concern, Class 3 shingles still provide strong protection and are typically about $1,000 less.
