Quick Answer: Texas insurance companies that offer an impact-resistant roof credit give the biggest one to Class 4 roofs, but each company sets its own amount. Roofing and insurance guides commonly report 10% to 35%, often on only part of your premium. Our advice would be to call your agent before you buy, and ask about the cosmetic damage exclusion that can come with it.

I get asked weekly about this discount, and the truth is there is no fixed amount set in stone. A lot of roofers, and a lot of websites, will tell you Texas law makes every insurer give it. That isn’t how it works in 2026, and I’d rather you know that before you spend the extra money for a class 4 impact-resistant shingle roof.

When I am discussing a Impact-Resistant shingle with a homeowner, the decision is always between a Class 3 or a Class 4 roofing system. I’ve had homeowners call me after getting their roof done with a Class 3 shingle tell me that they saved 15% off their premium, and with Class 4 shingles I’ve had customers tell me 25%. However, you want to call your agent and get a written quote for both and find out what type of policy they are giving you for the discount. Sometimes, a Class 4 shingle will result in a worse policy for hail damage.

Is the Discount Required in Texas?

Not anymore, at least not the way it used to be.

Back in 1998, TDI made roof credits for impact-resistant roofs mandatory for all licensed companies. Since then, Texas moved to a system where insurers file their own rates. Today TDI’s own page says the discount for each roof class is set by each insurance company, company-by-company. Each company also decides which tests it accepts and what paperwork it wants.

What hasn’t changed: A Class 4 roof gets the highest credits of the four classes.

There’s news, too. On September 16, 2026, TDI issued a bulletin pushing home insurers to give these discounts and recommended changing state laws so insurers have to consider storm-resistant upgrades when setting rates. The legislature meets in January 2027. So this could get better for homeowners. Today, though, it’s up to your insurer.

How much does a Class 4 Roof Save?

It depends on your carrier, your policy, and where you live. Here’s what published guides report.

Notice, that Prequalify Roof states that it comes off one part of your premium, not your whole bill. A “25% discount” can be a lot smaller in real dollars than it sounds.

Example: These are made-up numbers to show the math, not a quote:

  • Annual premium: $4,000.
  • Say the discount applies to $2,000 of it.
  • A 20% credit on that is: $400 a year.

Now compare that to what the upgrade costs you. On our price sheet, Class 4 shingles run $400 – $525 per square installed and Class 3 runs $350 to $425. On a 30-square roof, that’s roughly $1,500 to $3,000 more to go from Class 3 to Class 4. At $400 a year, you’d make that back in about 4 to 8 years.

Not to mention, on average our customers tell us they save 10-15% with a Class 3 shingle. One of our most popular Class 3 shingles would be Tamko TITAN XT, it’s one of the strongest shingles in it’s class with amazing color options.

The Catch: The Cosmetic Damage Exclusion.

This is the part people find out about later.

Texas has an optional policy endorsement called HO-145. It lets your insurer stop covering cosmetic hail damage to your roof. That means dents and marks that change how the roof looks but don’t let water in. Under TDI’s rules for that endorsement, it can only be added to policies that are getting the impact-resistant roof credit, it has to be signed by you, and your insurer has to
tell you about it.

Real damage that leaks or stops the roof from doing its job is still covered. But if hail scuffs up your new roof and it still sheds water, you may get nothing for it.

Carriers can also file their own versions of this wording, so read yours. Some homeowners take
the deal. Some don’t. I just want you to know it exists before you sign anything.

How to Claim the Discount, Step-by-Step.

  1. Call your agent before you sign a roofing contract. Get the discount in writing.
  2. Pick a product with a UL 2218 Class 4 rating that your insurer accepts. Keep a photo of the label on the bundle wrapper.
  3. Replace the whole roof. Credits are tied to replacing the roof covering, not patching part of it.
  4. Get the form. Your roofer fills out the TDI Form PC068, the Impact-Resistant Roofing Installation Form. TWIA requires it. Other insurers may use it or ask for you to fill out their own form.
  5. Send the filled out form to your agent with your invoice and photos of the roof replacement process.
  6. Check your next declarations page. Make sure the credit is actually on there.

We fill out the form the day we finish the roof and hand it to you with the product details.

5 Questions to Ask Your Agent.

Screen shot this or keep this page on your phone when you call your agent:

  1. Do you give a credit for a Class 4 Impact-Resistant roof? How much does it reduce my premium?
  2. Does it apply to my whole premium or only part of it?
  3. Will you add a cosmetic damage exclusion if I take the credit? Can I see the wording?
  4. What paperwork do you need? Is a TDI Form PC068 enough?
  5. Does the credit apply right away, or at my next renewal?
  6. If you do apply a cosmetic exclusion on a Class 4 shingle, can you give me the same information for a Class 3 roof?

Which roofs Qualify?

TDI says impact ratings can apply to shingles, tiles, shakes, metal panels, and other coverings. What matters the most is the Class 4 test rating, and whether your insurer accepts it.

Here’s what we install that qualifies as a UL 2218 Class 4 Impact-Resistant Roof:

Is a Class 4 Roof Worth it?

My honest opinion, if you plan to stay in the house 7 years or more and your agent gives you a real discount credit, the math tends to work in your favor. Even without a discount, you are buying a stronger roof in a state that sees a lot of hail and strong winds.

If you think you are selling your home in a couple of years, or your carrier offers a small discount, a good Class 3 shingle would make more sense. I can quote it both ways so you can compare and talk with your agent.

We’ll inspect your roof and give you a written quote with Class 3 and Class 4 roofing systems side-by-side. Take it to your agent, get your actual discount quote from them, and then you can decide what the best fit is for you.

Class 4 Insurance Discount FAQ

Each insurer sets its own credit. Published guides commonly report 10% to 35% for Class 4 roofs, often applied to only part of your premium. Ask your agent for the dollar amount on your policy before purchasing a Class 4 roofing system.

Not anymore. TDI made credits mandatory in 1998, but its current guidance says each company sets it own. A September 2026 TDI bulletin urged insurers to offer them and recommended changing the law.

TDI Form PC068, the Impact-Resistant Roofing Installation Form, filled out by your roofer. TWIA requires it. Other insurers may accept it or ask for their own form.

It’s an optional endorsement (HO-145) that stops coverage for hail damage that only affects how the roof looks. It can only be added when you’re getting the credit, and you have to sign it.

It can. TDI recognizes Class 1 through 4, and Class 4 gets the highest credit. Whether Class 3 earns anything, and how much, depends on your insurer.

Plan on it. Roof credits are tied to replacing the roof covering with a qualifying product. A partial repair won’t qualify with the insurers from what I’ve seen.
